Writing Five-Paragraph Essays and Not Eight
Writing Five-Paragraph Essays and Not EightIf you've spent any time around high school students or teachers, you've probably heard the following advice: you should write five paragraph essays and not eight. The reason for this is that eight-paragraph essays are seen as too formal writing. It may seem like an easy laugh line to give to this advice, but the truth is that this is actually an advice that can be taken seriously. In fact, there are a number of reasons why this advice is sometimes ignored and sometimes taken seriously. Let's take a look at these four reasons:The most obvious reason is that if you are writing in an eight-paragraph format, your writing will be shorter. When it comes to writing, shorter is usually better. This means that eight-paragraph essays can be more easily read by the teacher. If the essay is easy to read, then the student should be able to understand what the essay is trying to say.If you are writing for a class, the lesson learned can be far greater tha n if you were to try to do a one page paper on a sample. On the other hand, if you were to write an essay for a sample it would be far harder to have a coherent message.Note that I said coherent. No matter how difficult it may be to write an essay in a one page format, the lesson learned from that can be far greater than writing a one paragraph essay on a sample. In addition, when you write an eight-paragraph essay it may be more difficult to use the different paragraphs to convey a meaningful message. It may be more difficult to keep the same tone and topic throughout each paragraph, but this is something that you can overcome with practice. Finally, we come to the final reason for the advice to write five-paragraph essays and not eight: students tend to become bored with writing a five paragraph essay. This is especially true when you think about the number of people who do not finish their five paragraph essay. Because of this, some feel that the advice to write five-paragraph essa ys is in reality an annoyance rather than a helpful piece of advice. The bottom line is that you do not have to write a one paragraph essay if you do not want to. When you do not feel that you are ready to write a five paragraph essay, you should consider not writing an eight-paragraph essay at all.
