Heroes Robert Cormier Atmosphere and Mood Essay
Francis has entered LaSalleââ¬â¢s tenement with the intentions of killing LaSalle. Francis is very quick to declare the reason for his presence at Larryââ¬â¢s tenement. Ever since Francis came back from the war, killing Larry is all Francis has wanted to accomplish. ââ¬ËSay your prayersâ⬠¦ I rehearsed those words so many times through the years.ââ¬â¢ Straight away we see this sense of determination within Francis. Francis has been ââ¬Ërehearsingââ¬â¢ this moment ever since Larry raped Nicole. Heââ¬â¢s been waiting for LaSalleââ¬â¢s return to Frenchtown for ââ¬Ëyearsââ¬â¢ so that he can seek revenge. Here Cormier creates a sense of violence and tension. ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ve decided to aim for the heartââ¬â¢ Francisââ¬â¢ thoughts towards Larry are quite violent and he wishes to ââ¬Ëshatter his heart the way he broke Nicoleââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢. Francis wants nothing but revenge and intends to attain it. Cormierââ¬â¢s use of Similes is very clever . Francis wants to do physically what Larry did to them mentally. Despite Larryââ¬â¢s horrific character, he knows Francis very well. Larry knows that no matter how angry Francis is, he will never be able to physically murder someone. Larry ââ¬Ëwithdraws a pistolââ¬â¢ knowing that Francis wonââ¬â¢t be able to fulfil his ââ¬Ëmissionââ¬â¢. The pistol was a ââ¬Ërelic from the warââ¬â¢; it seems as if everything bad that happened in Francisââ¬â¢ life lies right there in that tenement. ââ¬ËLeave me here, leaver everything hereâ⬠¦ leave it all behind with meââ¬â¢ We can see how quickly the mood changes, from Francisââ¬â¢ violent words to Larryââ¬â¢s words of comfort. Francis ââ¬Ësuddenly wants go get out of thereââ¬â¢ he wants no part in Larry anymore and the ââ¬Ëaroma of the soup is sickening and the tenement is too warm.ââ¬â¢ Cormier creates a rather nauseating atmosphere; Larryââ¬â¢s tenement is a place no one would want to be in. ââ¬ËThe sound of a pistol cracks the air.ââ¬â¢ The theme of innocence runs throughout the whole book, just like the world innocence was shattered by the war and Nicoles innocence was shattered by Larry, Frenchtown is now also shat tered by a ââ¬Ëpistol shotââ¬â¢ cracking the air.
